About Naseby Crossing
Edgy Indie-Folk with authentic and kick-ass songs, Naseby Crossing have been described as “infuriatingly brilliant, unsettling in this steady folk world”.
Midlands UK-based, Tim Kirby & Steve Droy are Naseby Crossing, joined on occasion by vocalist Clare Marshall, Rai Clews on Cajon and multi-instrumentalist Paul Creedy.
Although based in a small idyllic rural part of West Northamptonshire, Naseby Crossing is proving to be anything but small - We are definitely not a "local" band says Tim Kirby, Its not just because neither of us come from the area originally, but we have been amazed at the number of people from abroad who love us especially from the US, where we are getting extensive radio airplay on the college networks with ‘Stornoway’."
As if proof of their universal appeal were needed the guys received an email recently from legendary American Folk revivalist Singer songwriter and former Chicago Sun Times Music Critic Jo Mapes; praising them for their song-writing and unique sound.
Praise indeed from the woman who influenced Bob Dylan and inspired Joan Baez!
Presenting a mature, cohesive body of work, the songs draw on folk, roots and melodic influences. Recurrent themes of identity loss, time and migration become apparent. Socially-aware, and community-orientated, the songs do not just gnaw over the bones of life injustices, but seek a modern and progressive solution for the brand new plan.
The early part of 2011 caused a bit of a stir in the West Country, have been on a folk rockin' roll - gigging around Hereford and Worcester as well as closer to home. With their following gaining momentum and offers of gigs flooding in, it is a fantastically busy time for the band.
"Now is the time for us to bring in some other great musicians for us to enhance the Naseby Crossing sound. We have Glastonbury Festival we're playing at at the end of June, and we've beefed up the sound.
It has been a little strange", says Steve "working with other musicians, having to let go of our songs a bit having sweated over them like children! But it feels right and great to be able to get together with percussionists and guitarists to give us a fuller sound on stage particularly when we play the festivals this summer"
There is nothing like a Naseby Crossing gig when the vocals kick in on top of the guitars and the hairs stand up on the back of your neck. Then you know you are in for a hell of a night.
“Our music has folk and world roots, but is more edgier and melodic than typical folk music. People come to the shows, have a great time, and are singing along to the songs for the next week! The music is surely number one – the most important thing – with us.” says Tim.
"These are "real life" songs, each different yet united by an unwavering spirit that weaves its way through them. Like a rare kind of beauty that seems to shine through the music's mix of melody and story-telling . . . timeless."
Fiona Pernice - Naseby Crossing 'Sailorman' CD Review
"I’m disappointed that I haven’t come across this very alternative folk group before. Hailing from my native Northamptonshire, Naseby Crossing, MMM is featuring the title track from EP Sailorman. Imagine the classic British storyteller stylings of the Kinks’ Ray Davies but with an edgier, acousticified (is that a word? No? Well I just made it up), REM with a Celtic folk twist." – Beatlebabe – Midlands Music Maniacs
